Interest in 3D food printing seems to be crashing pretty spectacularly

Interest in 3D food printing seems to be crashing pretty spectacularly
The 3D printing market has seen an explosion of creativity in recent months and it’s hard to say whether this stems from healthy demand or from a tech industry bubble that’s still inflating at a frightening pace. Either way, the latest bloom of innovation comes from Oxford-based company called Dovetailed and it has just launched a 3D printer that “extends a molecular-gastronomy technique called spherification.” To put it bluntly, the machine creates spherical blobs of jelly that adhere together forming raspberry-shaped delicacies. The company calls these concoctions “fresh and organic 3D fruits on demand,” although they do sound a lot like plain old jellies.  3D printing edible items is an idea that has generated a ton of publicity over the past six months, but it’s unclear what the commercial prospects truly are. A Kickstarter project called Foodini got torturously close to its $100,000 goal a few weeks ago, but fell short and only hit the $80,000 mark when its time ran out. The interesting thing about Foodini’s failure was the remarkably broad media coverage it managed to generate — the project achieved notably positive pieces at TechCrunch, Engagdet, GigaOm, Mashable, Wired, The Wall Street Journal, BBC, The Guardian, Bloomberg and Vanity Fair.

Robert Gates: China, Russia Are Becoming Aggressive As They Perceive U.S. Pulling Back

PUTIN JINPING

Former U.S. Defense Secretary Robert Gates said Wednesday that China and Russia are becoming more aggressive as they perceive the U.S. pulling back from world affairs.

“With all the talk of coming home, of nation building at home, the perception has grown increasingly around the world that the U.S. is pulling back from the global responsibilities that it has shouldered for many decades," Gates told CNN host Fareed Zakaria during a conversation hosted by the Council on Foreign Relations in New York City. “I believe Russia and China, among others, see that void and are moving to see what advantage they can take of it.

“They’re not going to challenge us in a way that would produce a conflict, but as they perceive our unwillingness to commit overseas, our unwillingness to make tough decisions, as in Syria, I think they see opportunities to pursue their own nationalist ambitions and to take other actions that are self-aggrandizing,” Gates said.

He said that in the early 1970s, then-President Richard Nixon and Secretary of State Henry Kissinger dealt with America's loss in Vietnam by reaching out to the Soviet Union and Maoist China, making it clear that the U.S. was going to remain the “big dog.” “We were going to be in charge because we had better relations with the Soviets and better relations with the Chinese than they had with each other,” Gates said. “There are no such opportunities now.”

Two Apples a Day May Keep Strokes Away

By ABC News
May 8, 2014 4:37pm

By Sheliza Lalani, MD, MPH
When it comes to strokes, the old adage “an apple a day keeps the doctor away” might be half true.
A new review of 20 studies suggests that eating 200 grams of fruit a day — the equivalent of two small apples — can cut your stroke risk by almost a third. Your stroke risk drops 11 percent with every 200 grams of vegetables consumed daily, according to the study, published today in the journal Stroke.
“A diet rich in fruits and vegetables is highly recommended because it meets micronutrient and macronutrient and fiber requirements without adding substantially to overall energy requirements,” study author Dr. Yan Qu of Qingdao Municipal Hospital in China said in a statement. In particular, Yan told ABC News, “citrus fruits, leafy vegetables, apples and pears” seem to be linked to a lower risk of stroke.
The findings held up even when the researchers accounted for other factors like smoking, alcohol, high blood pressure, physical activity and body mass index.
Nutrition experts not involved with the study said the research offers one more important reason to load up on fruits and vegetables.

Most People in the World Have No Idea How to Manage Their Money

how to work from home!

$1,000,000 one million dollar bill
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The Atlantic By Moisés Naím

Do you understand money? Let’s see how well you do with the following questions.

1.  Suppose you had $100 in a savings account and the interest rate was 2 percent per year. After five years, how much do you think you would have in the account if you left the money to grow? A) more than $102; B) exactly $102; C) less than $102; D) do not know; refuse to answer.

2.  Imagine that the interest rate on your savings account is 1 percent per year and inflation is 2 percent per year. After one year, would you be able to buy A) more than, B) exactly the same as, or C) less than today with the money in this account?; D) do not know; refuse to answer.

3.  Do you think that the following statement is true or false? “Buying a single company stock usually provides a safer return than a stock mutual fund.” A) true; B) false; C) do not know; refuse to answer.

The correct answers are 1-A; 2-C; and 3-B.

How did you do? Did you respond correctly to all three questions? If you did, then you belong to a surprisingly small global minority.

In Russia, 96 percent of those surveyed could not answer the three questions correctly. While that might be expected of a post-communist nation, the mecca of capitalism didn’t exactly yield glowing results—only 30 percent of Americans aced the quiz. The best-performing respondents were the Germans (53 percent got a perfect score) and the Swiss (50 percent), but this still leaves almost half of each country’s population without a basic understanding of financial matters. In countries with relatively strong economies, the numbers are sobering: 79 percent of Swedes, 75 percent of Italians, 73 percent of Japanese, and 69 percent of French could not respond correctly to all three questions.

Angelina Jolie: I thought I'd never find love

By Breeanna Hare, CNN
May 7, 2014 -- Updated 1849 GMT (0249 HKT)

Pitt and Jolie appear at the 18th annual Screen Actors Guild Awards in Los Angeles in January 2012.

(CNN) -- Remember the dark and brooding Angelina Jolie, the one who wore one husband's blood around her neck and shared an uncomfortably intense kiss with her brother?
That wasn't about rebellion, Jolie tells Elle magazine in its June issue. That was a 20-something trying to find herself.
"It wasn't a need to be destructive or rebellious -- it's that need to find a full voice, to push open the walls around you," the 38-year-old actress says. "You want to be free. And as you start to feel that you are being corralled into a certain life, you kind of push against it. It may come out very strange, it may be interpreted wrong, but you're trying to find out who you are."
Interestingly, who she thought she'd become and who she ended up being are two different things. Now a mom of six and engaged to Brad Pitt, Jolie says she once believed she wouldn't have kids or find love.
"I never thought I'd have children, I never thought I'd be in love, I never thought I'd meet the right person," Jolie says. "Having come from a broken home -- you kind of accept that certain things feel like a fairy tale, and you just don't look for them."

How to Ensure your Love Lasts A LOT Longer

Whether you are just experiencing premature ejaculation for the first time, or you are finally deciding to take a stand and do something about your unfortunate shortcoming, you have come to the right place.  Sure you may have done all the research, looked into other solutions, and debated for weeks over what the best solution is when it comes to finishing early, but now you can finally sit back, get comfortable, and relax now that you have found a solution.
Prosolution Pills have become world renowned for their ability to provide stronger, harder, and more powerful erections, but one of lesser known benefits for this product comes along with its ability to improve the length of erections as well. The natural ingredients supply your body and your penis with more power and psychologically give you more inspiration to keep at it, based on how good it feels and how enjoyable the experience is on the whole. What many users of Pro Solution experience is that even if they do orgasm early on, they are still able to keep their erection and continue down the road to full satisfaction.
In simpler terms, while Pro Solution is known for enhancing the size of erections it can also allow men to benefit from longer lasting erections and even lead to multiple orgasms in the right situations.

Monica Lewinsky opens up on affair with Clinton

Associated Press By CALVIN WOODWARD

WASHINGTON (AP) — Monica Lewinsky says there's no question her boss — Bill Clinton — "took advantage" of her when he was president.

But she says their affair was consensual and if there was any abuse involved, it came afterward, when Clinton's inner circle tried to discredit her and the president's opponents used her as a political pawn.

The former White House intern, now 40, writes about her life in the next issue of Vanity Fair magazine, out this month. In released excerpts, she says she's perhaps the first Internet era scapegoat and wants to speak out on behalf of other victims of online humiliation.

Her willingness to step forward may come at an inopportune time as former first lady Hillary Rodham Clinton considers running for president. Republicans have signaled they don't consider her husband's scandal from the late 1990s out of bounds in the realm of 2016-style political dialogue.

DEA, Federal Government's Dealer, Goes Shopping for More Pot

BY M. ALEX JOHNSON
Uncle Sam furtively looks both ways and ducks into a dark alley to meet with a shadowy figure.

"Psst," he says. "I need 629 kilos of your best weed."

"I can do that," the figure replies.

While that may be an exaggeration, it is closer to reality than you might think. Yes, the U.S. government is looking to fill its shopping cart with marijuana. And its dealer — by law — is the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration.

At the same time that it's responsible for enforcing federal laws against marijuana, the DEA is also responsible for procuring it for federal research. And with two months left in the fiscal year, its customers have fallen short.

Way, way short.

ABC News Blogs

A California mom is calling Police Officer Matt Olin and "angel from God" for rushing to her 4-year-old daughter's aid after she nearly drowned in the family pool and had stopped breathing.

The girl's mother, Sara Villasenor, says her daughter Nina and 6-year-old son Rikki were swimming in her dad's pool in Costa Mesa, Calif., Monday evening while their grandpa was watching from inside. Villasenor said she went inside to use the restroom and two minutes later, heard her son screaming.

Nina had slipped off her floaties and went underwater.

Ukraine crisis: Small numbers, global impact

Donetsk, Ukraine (CNN) -- The world sees Ukraine in turmoil, a country divided between Russian speakers and Ukrainian nationalists, its towns and cities roiled by occupations, its highways dotted with improvised barricades.
The reality is rather different. Only one town in eastern Ukraine -- Slovyansk, is truly held by pro-Russian protesters, with roadblocks at several entrances. Its defenders are a mixture of the "men in green," dozens of well-armed fighters wearing fatigues and balaclavas, teenagers looking for some action and what might be termed the Baboushka Brigade, middle-aged women with flashing gold teeth who decry the Kiev "junta" and see Vladimir Putin as their savior (and the prospect of Russian ownership as bringing improved pensions).
A relatively compact town of narrow streets, with several river crossings at its outskirts, Slovyansk is easy to defend. The active pro-Russian groups there -- civilian and in uniform(s) -- seem to number no more than several hundred. Of the 130,000 inhabitants, many seem sympathetic to the pro-Russian protesters -- or more accurately hostile to the government in Kiev, which they see as dominated by nationalists who will sell out to the European Union and NATO. But most people go about their lives almost oblivious to the upheaval. Weddings take place, people sit by the lake eating kebabs and pizza, the outdoor market bustles.

NATO official: Russia now an adversary

Associated Press By ROBERT BURNS

WASHINGTON (AP) — After two decades of trying to build a partnership with Russia, NATO now feels compelled to start treating Moscow as an adversary, the alliance's second-ranking official said Thursday.

"Clearly the Russians have declared NATO as an adversary, so we have to begin to view Russia no longer as a partner but as more of an adversary than a partner," said Alexander Vershbow, the deputy secretary-general of NATO.

In a question-and-answer session with a small group of reporters, Vershbow said Russia's annexation of Crimea and its apparent manipulation of unrest in eastern Ukraine have fundamentally changed the NATO-Russia relationship.

"In central Europe, clearly we have two different visions of what European security should be like," Vershbow, a former U.S. diplomat and onetime Pentagon official, said. "We still would defend the sovereignty and freedom of choice of Russia's neighbors, and Russia clearly is trying to re-impose hegemony and limit their sovereignty under the guise of a defense of the Russian world."

In April, NATO suspended all "practical civilian and military cooperation" with Russia, although Russia has maintained its diplomatic mission to NATO, which was established in 1998.

Hit the Gym, Gentlemen, with HyperGH 14x

Quick question for you. What's the leading cause of death for American men? According to the Center for Disease Control, it's heart disease, which in 2006, accounted for just over a quarter of all deaths among men in the United States.

That might have been a few years ago, but further stats suggest that risk of heart disease hasn't faded much since then. You know those risks right? Obesity, smoking and stress, among others. And, of course, lack of exercise.
Suffice to say, it's important for men of all ages to exercise. Any thing's good, really, so long as we get at least 30 minutes per session, and preferably five or six times a week.
Of course, most men are more into the free weights routine than aerobics, and there's nothing wrong with that. So long as you're getting some cardio in there, somewhere, men can get most of their exercise needs met with good old resistance training.
In this article we'll discuss three of the core resistance exercises that are most beneficial to men, for health, longevity and less chance the grim reaper will come before you've achieved what you want in this life. We'll also review that men should indeed supplement for the gym with age. What supplement works best? Hint: it ain't steroids. Try HyperGH 14x. We'll get to that.

Mom exercising with son kicked out of LA Fitness gym

By Charlene Sakoda

Krista Grubb never thought that working out with her 13-year-old son Mason Halye at the LA Fitness gym in Palm Harbor, Florida would get her membership revoked, but that's just what happened.

As reported by WTVT Fox 13, Grubb, a fitness trainer, was happy to guide her son as he began to lift weights. "I was really excited to have him come in and lift and see the changes in his body that I saw in mine," the mom said. "Through lifting weights and just working out, I gained a lot of confidence.” The mother and son began to work out together at LA Fitness. Mason enjoyed it and said, “It was a good like, bonding time for me and my mom."

Dream-Like Song Created From Birds Perched On Electric Wires Proves Nature Is Perfect (VIDEO)

The Huffington Post | by Sarah Barness

"Reading the newspaper one morning, I saw this picture of birds on the electric wires," says video creator Jarbas Agnelli."I cut out the photo and decided to make a song, using the exact location of the birds as notes. I was just curious to hear what melody the birds were creating."

Interpreting the position of birds as musical notes resulted in the beautiful piece you hear above. The work was made over an original photo shot by Paulo Pinto and published in 2009 in a Brazilian newspaper "O Estado de São Paulo."

The video description ends with this: "I just erased the birds for effect at the end, but didn't change their positions at all. What would be the point?"
